The Human Mirror
I Met The Walrus
In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace. Using the original interview as the soundtrack, this narrative tenderly romances Lennon's every word in a cascading flood of multi-pronged animation. (imdb / sundance film festival)

Encore!
The Grey Album is an album by Danger Mouse, released in 2004. It uses an a cappella version of rapper Jay-Z's The Black Album and couples it with instrumentals created from a multitude of unauthorized samples from The Beatles (more commonly known as The White Album). The Grey Album gained notoriety due to the response by EMI in attempting to halt its distribution. (thanks wiki!)
Here, the concept is taken further by adding some clever visuals to the audio...

skinkers

Skinkers...
has anyone ever managed to use one on a job?
I've suggested them a couple of times but they've never been bought, or maybe they're just old hat? I got the Orange version on my p.c. at home (they don't seem to load on the mac). It seems like a really good idea. You can down load the "skinker to your desktop and it acts as a direct link to content on a website e.g.. the virgin one alerts you to certain deals on fairs etc but you don't have to go to the main website, it just comes up on your desk-top. They can be an animated character (like the orange one) or just a logo (bbc).

Great resource for designers who are intent on gaining a better understanding of development and how it can extend their design skills.

In praise of Dave Trott
Shortly after I landed my first agency job, the big boss gave me a piece of advice that has stayed with me to this day: "In marketing, you're only going to meet two types of people - simplifier and complicators".
Dave Trott's piece in this week's Campaign - How to get your first job in advertising - is testament to that advice. It's a such a breath of fresh air. I mean proper, proper...
It's a fantastic read ostensibly aimed at teams looking to get their first agency job. But it will help anyone whose job it is to evaluate and appraise creative work, whether you're agency or client side.
It is a perfect example of how process liberates rather than stifles creativity. And Dave teaches you how advertising sells products, and how to sell your creative work "If you stop trying to be clever and just be logical, the product will end up selling itself".
The piece is introduced by Peter Souter of AMV who offers up this little gem: "I suspect Dave has never called himself a "creative". He's just a salesman, albeit one of the three best salesmen Britain has ever produced".
It's Dave's gift to all of us, client or agency; creative or suit. So if you only do one thing today grab a copy from someone's desk and head for trap two. Alternatively, you can download a PDF of the piece at noisydecentgraphics.typepad.com/downloads/howtobydavetrott.pdf

Origami Whale by Greenpeace

Nice online campaign via Greenpeace that takes a sly, albeit well deserved swipe at the Japanese and their 'scientific' whaling methods. Users go to Save a Whale and make a traditional “paper” origami whale. You must sign your name for a petition (as an Australian citizen, use post code 6006 and big up North Perth!) for the Prime Minister of Japan.
Then it's down to designing your whale. Nice idea and well executed.
Make love, not harpoons!!
